Put it in da books...
The competition barbecue season has officially come to a close, at least for a lightweight like me.
Is it sad? Not really. This year has been rough and I still have to clean a ton of sh#t out of the trailer from last weekend.
But it was a productive year in our development. You see, my friends (royalty check en route to John McCain), this is only our second real season. A few years ago we took the plunge at a contest held in New Paltz, NY and, after getting our butts wooped bad, I vowed never to return. But more on the beginning of team SIDE later.
Winter passed, the bbq bugs were out in force and I decided to jump back in last spring. Two calls at a grilling contest, two more at the next grilling contest and our first grilling grand championship at the last.
As for the real deal KCBS BBQ contests? We bombed our second (and vowed again to quite doing BBQ!), retooled and got a 2nd place call for chicken and 12th overall out of 72 teams, then finally got a top 10 finish overall with a first in pork at last year's Battle of the BBQ Brethren.
2008 opened with a bang, grabbing our second GC in grilling, followed by a fourth place BBQ finish (and first top three rib call), a 17th place finish out of 72 teams, a fifth place overall (and first top three brisket call), and our first BBQ grand championship last weekend.
So what can you, the reader of my random rants take away from this? One bad day does not make you a bad cook. If our next contest completely bombs, I may tweak things slightly but I know that consistency is what will win the game 1 in 8 times.
