Many things have changed over the last 30 years. People have seen death and destruction and made it part of their lives. Were I live 2 generations have came to accept death and severe injury as part of their lives.
We now have peace, but when Death is filmed constantly, people need simple lyrics and strong visual enhancement to realise that things are wrong in this world.
Look at the music of the 60's and 70's much of it was shite, no meaning whatsoever. Much of what you have said can be applied to the music of the generation you grew up in if 1956 is the year of your birth.
Bar for some politically motivated singers and groups, the Vietnam war was ignored by the musical establishment of the time and for you to condemn Green Day as being bland is like saying Dylan was a monochromatic singer about the political struggle in the US in the 60,s.
Lyrics change, and the way things are said change, but the feeling remains the same, this is an anti-war song.
regardless of what you feel , the sentiment behind this song is good and maybe one day I will meet you robert(unlikely) and tell you of my tales as a nurse in Northern Ireland during the troubles. When you have had your finger in a bullet hole to stop someone dying, or held parts of a person, then you will know what war is like.
And before you ask I was not a member of the armed forces, I was a normal nurse.
